HOW MY LINNIE LIFE STARTED
One day I entered a Petco to buy bird supplies for my cockatiel, Goldie. I took a look at the birds as I usually do, and BAMM - I caught the Eyes of a Linnie. They were large, black, with a unique expression that touched my heart. I checked the label on the cage and it said Lineolated Parakeet. I've never heard of them, and I left as quickly as possible and tried to forget about that gorgeous Turquoise colored bird.
I kept thinking of those Linnie Eyes and suddenly found myself surprised to read the cover of my next Bird Talk Magazine (July 2007). So what do you think it said? "The Linnie: Your Next Pet Bird?" Talk about signs from the Universe! I read the article and immediately went to the internet to learn more about the Lineolated Parakeet.
To my surprise I didn't find lots of web sites on Linnies, but there was enough out there to help me decide if I wanted one or not...and I certainly did. The best thing I did was to Join 2 great Yahoo Groups. One is the Lineolated Parakeets Yahoo Group and the Linnie Lovers Yahoo Group.. There I found lots of people who were willing to answer my "beginner" questions. I was obsessed with learning more about the sounds they make. I didn't want a noisy pet bird because my husband works from home, and already had to deal with my cockatiels constant loud squawks.
So I posted my question on what they sound like, and most replies said they were pretty quiet, and that they purred instead of chirp....(huh?). I called every pet store in New Jersey and found that they were not anywhere to be found (the one at Petco was no longer there). Luckily, both the Yahoo Groups on Linnies has a list of breeders.
Eventually, I did find Linnies at a pet shop, and 2 linnies came home with me that day. I had already purchased their cage which is a mansion, and I filled it up with lots of toys. I didn't hear them make a sound until a day or 2 later...and you know what? They do purr....it's so cute! Most of the noise that comes from their cage is the time they spend playing in their cage. They loved inspecting their new digs. What fun it is to watch them!
Let me introduce you to my Linnies! Below is my lutino linnie named Sonny, and my turquoise linnie named Chipper!
Bookmark this site because I seem to have caught the Linnie Bug, and I have more linnies on the way. Click here for the Photo Gallery on other Lineolated Parakeets from around the world.
